Filming: Shooting Day 1 (Georgia)

Our group started filming on Monday and after watching our clips back were quite disappointed with the outcome. We felt that the lighting in the room was poor as it was too dark even with the curtains opened and struggled to film what we needed in this environment. As we were filming clips that were supposed to be in the morning, we felt that this was an issue, and needed better lighting in order to make it clear to the audience that this is shot in the morning.

After some consideration, the group have decided to re-film these clips however will do so in a different bedroom, as my room has white walls and better lighting, and so feel our clips will be much brighter and clearer if filmed in there. Also after having had some time to film, we have gone over our shot plan and thinking about how to improve it to convey our ideas clearer. One way in which we have decided to achieve this is to include a wider variety of shots to make our title sequence more interesting. We will also include a string of jump cuts to convey how the main character is moving frantically, this will also build up suspense as the story begins to come together.

PLANNING - Institutions - Finding a Distribution Company

A distribution company is responsible for the following things:

  1. Buying the rights of the film,
  2. Selling as many prints as possible for the film to cinemas for 'exhibition' or auxiliary markets,
  3. Creating a successful marketing campaign to attract the target and wider audience into seeing the film.

Representation (Adriana)

Representation

  • The characters we will introduce in our title sequence is the young adult and the child and her friend slightly.
  • The social classes shown is midr class, with the ABC scale of C
  • We represent these groups by what they were and the accomidation they are in, it is will kept in decent looking homes. However, we subvert the stereotype as the character will be black, instead of the typical working class protagonist being white.

PLANNING - Institutions - Finding a Distribution Company

Research: Existing Distribution Companies

1.Zodiac

It was distributed by Paramount Pictures in the US and by Warner Bros internationally. The marketing tools that they used were posters, adverts in forms of a movie trailer and it had its own website. It was widely released in several cinemas. After its release, it became available on DVD, Blu Ray. In the box office, it made over $84 million and its DVD sales was 21,139,119.

Fatal Attraction

It was distributed by Paramount Pictures and it was widely released. As it was released in 1987, they may have used posters and a movie trailer. From 2005, there was Special Collector's Edition of the Film and in 2009, it was released on Blu - ray. It did exceedingly well in the box office as it made $ 320,145,693 worldwide and made $70,000,000 in rentals

Paramount Pictures owns CBS Television Studios & the CW Television Network. In an addition to this, it has a hotel called 'Paramount Hotels and Resorts' and it owns 50% in a India based PVR cinemas Dubai.

As both of the films were distributed, the likelihood of Paramount Pictures distributed your film is minimal as the budget for their films is over millions, whereas as we are students, our budget for our film is very limited in comparison.
Another reason is that they mainly distribute action/adventure and the genre of our film is a mystery/horror.

Planning, props

Props.
This is all our main props that will be used in our title sequence.

Planning costume ideas

Task 1
 Spiderman
Spiderman has a distinctive costume that all audiences recognises,  a spiderman costume. It has a webbed design to represent a spider. When he isn't in costume he dresses very casual as he is a college student. His makeup is bruises and scars, this shows that he is invokced in violence.
Mean girls
Mean girls have a early 2000 style woch consists of low jeans, and mini skirts,  anything thats shows a bit of skin. Pink is s colour often worn too, this emphasis the style of girls they are. They also wear high heels which seems unessesary to school but this shows their high maintenance behaviour. Their make is quite noticeable yet natural.
Batman, the joker
The joker has an unusual costume as his makep contradicts his outfit. The outfit is suit of wrird colours which is green and purple.  The colours alone shoe the strange characteristics.  The makeup is a white face with bold red line along the mouth to represent a slit.

Task 2

My name is Jade, I'm 17 years old and in high school. I am judged by the way I dress, apparently its not girly enough, its too thug. Due to peoples perception of me, I hang with the boys instead of the girls. I am steretyped as ghetto as i go to a white dominated school. Despite the discrimination,  when one of my bullied are in trouble, I help them.

Task 3
This red lipstick will be worn by the patient,  in the sequence she will apply this every morning when she wakes up, like it's her identity/costume. This will contradicts with her stalking behaviour as the lipstick is put on as a trade mark

Planning: Mise-en-scene

Planning: Props

Planning: Costume Ideas

Task 1 Characters in films with memorable costumes:

The Hunger Games - Effie Trinket: She seems to be wearing a wig (as her hair does seem to change throughout the movie) with a giant pink flower hat on top of it, Her face is very pale due to the make up with pink eyeshadow and lipstick. The theme of her costume seems to be pink and flowery as the scarf is also pink and has flowers on it, her dress has puffy shoulders and is of course pick.

Breakfast at Tiffany's - Holly Golightly: this costume is quite sophisticated, she is in a basic black dress with long black gloves, draped her with five rows of jewels and topped it off with a mini-tiara. The costume is very simple but elegant and beautiful.

Edward Scissorhands - Edward Scissorhands
wearing a white shirt and suspenders, black hair his make has been done in away to make him like less human and he has blades for hands.

Task 2

Here is Amelia, she is the main character in the title sequence around 29 years old and works as a manager in a fashion retail store her role in the title sequence is the stalker no one would expect her to be the stalker as her personality is fun and bubbly but she is the 'villian' in the title sequence.

Finding and planning locations setting

Presentation

Who is my target audience and what do they think of my ideas? (Adriana)

My target audience is a female aged 24, working class and lives in Barking.

Person 1: Cristina
She likes the idea of a man going into a coma and coming out and believing he finds his "wife" and begins to stalk her and take pictures of her. This may be because her favourite genres are romance and thriller, and this idea has a hint of romance as its a husband and wife situation.

Person 2: Rebecca
She likes the idea of a woman going into a coma and coming out and believing she finds her "daughter" and begins to stalk her continously and goes her her same location every specific day. She researches her and plans everyday.  This may like this idea because it is Thriller and mystery and these are her favourite genre combinations.

Person 3: Jenny
She doesn't like my idea of stalking because she doesn't prefer these aspects in films, also she prefers non fictional films, like documantires etc.

Planning, Audience member profile 2

Identity
This is similar to our plan of our film as it also involves identity and loss of memory.  In addition the genre is Thriller,  mystery like ours.

Conclusion:
These two films were used in my target audience research, task 12, this is because these two films slightly inspired us with the idea of our film. This was to base it on loss of memory and planning, this is why these two films are used throughout my research and planning. This is due to them relating to our subgenre.
Both target audiences are males that are adults, social grade of C2DE , top region is Yorkshire, general interests are movies, cliche interests are England national cricket game, watching movies at home, they're consumer of samsung tablet and Toshiba.

Planning, Audience member profile

Unknown
Thus film is similar to our plan of our film is because its the same genre which is Thriller, mystery.  Also, similar ideas and style as ours. The story has to do wuth identity,  like ours.

Practical Remake Activity

I think that the remake of The Breakfast Club was successful as we were able to find similar locations and items to the scenes in the movie. Also, the camera shots replicated the movie. As a group, we were delegated different tasks to do to make the filming process go off without a hitch, it quickened the whole process of filming and planning. I was charge of  getting the items that was needed for each scene, knowing what the next scene was and its location. Adriana was charge of physically creating the scenes such as the graffiti on the board and the prom queen poster and Anita was in charge of drawing out the storyboard for the various scenes. We all took an active part in filming.

We had good communication skills as we understood which each of us had to do and knew what items we needed for each scene. This is because we created a storyboard of the scenes that we were going to do, which included the shot type, the location and the items required.

RESEARCH - Genre Conventions

My group and I have decided that we are doing a combinations of both genres of mystery and thriller. Here are conventions of both of these genres:

Codes and conventions of a Thriller

Codes are systems of signs in which create meaning. Codes can be divided into two categories; technical and symbolic.

Thrillers

  • A thriller shows a series of bad events in which build up tension before the climax.
  • A thriller consists of both an antagonist and a protagonist, who battle to restore/destroy justice.
  • The storyline will be designed so that the audience will be able to relate to it, believing it could happen to anyone. This adds to the audience feeling scared and therefore stay interested in the film.

Sound in a thriller

Thrillers use music to help build tension/suspense. Music is essential in the build up as it makes a scene more dramatic and interesting for the audience, and also helps to set out the mood of the scene.

Conventions of a thriller

  • Music that builds up suspense/tension,
  • Black and white shots,
  • A protagonist and an antagonist,
  • Shadows,
  • Quick cuts,
  • Shadows,
  • Breathing sounds,
  • Changes in angles of shots.

Mise en scene

The location is also important when establishing the theme of the film. An example of this is the protagonist wearing everyday clothing and the antagonist wearing dark clothes. This further establishes their roles, and helps the audience to relate to the protagonist through them living an ordinary life and experiencing situations in which could happen to anyone.

Conventions of Mystery Genre

Themes in mystery
  • Justice,
  • Good vs bad,
  • Confusion,
  • Interrogation,
  • Crime.

Setting

Settings are very important when setting the tone of the film. There are a variation of settings within the mystery genre. Some popular examples are remote countrysides or abandoned places. These settings are successful in mystery films as they are cut off from busy areas and are low populated, making the atmosphere more scary and builds up tension.

Narrative Structure

Mystery films often follow a similar narrative of an ordinary hero going about their normal life. Something then goes wrong which sets out the rest of the story, such as someone being killed. The hero is then involved in solving the issue.

RESEARCH - Practical Remake Activity Editing and Final Cut

Resaerch: Genre short list

Checklist
Comedy
  Thriller       Mystery

These were the three genres that we were thinking to do, however once comedy was unselected we couldn't choose between Thriller and Mystery therefore we merged the genres together and created a sub-genre. Thriller and Mystery are good combinations as it can attract a wide audience, of a wide age, class etc. These two genres are the best as a preferred them and thought they were the least complicated to do, for example the genre Horror would be quite hard to film as that is gory and gruesome, this will take a lot of re shooting and prop preparation, but we wouldn't have enough time to complete something to a good standard.
