Prelim Evaluation Georgia

Preliminary Evaluation

While planning the making of our prelim our group created a storyboard which I found very helpful as our group had a visual plan we were always able to refer back to. The storyboard allowed us to plan our different shots so we were able to get on with filming once it came to it, rather than working without a storyboard and taking time trying to film on the spot without any plan.

Another thing I found very helpful while planning the prelim was having a script. As our prelim contained quite a short conversation, our script was quite simple with only a few lines to help prompt the two actors. This came in handy as the actors had to remember exactly what they had said subsequently after saying their lines, so that once we put the different shot reverse shot clips together, the conversation made sense. The script allowed us to do this quite successfully without any problems and resulted in quite a smooth conversation.

Previous to filming our prelim we were taught how to use different pieces of equipment such as the camera and tripod, we also learnt about pan, tilt and zoom which are camera techniques in which our group used in the filming of our prelim. After learning about the different pieces of equipment and filming techniques we could use, I decided I would help behind the scenes rather than being one of the actors. One thing in which I did behind the camera was holding the fig rig which allowed me to be stable whilst holding and moving the camera and prevented the film looking shaky.

While filming our prelim we also had to consider certain techniques such as shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule which I think our group managed to pull off pretty well as we did not cross over the line and our shot reverse shots were quite smooth once all put together.

One thing I have considered and would change if we had more time would be to change the amount of head space there was above our actors heads in some shots as their heads were not always in the third section of the screen. After considering this I will make sure that next time I am filming this does not happen, as I will remember the head space rule.

Also while editing our prelim we made sure our group rotated and that all five of us had a chance at editing our prelim. This was good as each of us got to develop our editing skills and use some of the features such as cutting, extending and chopping clips.

Overall, I am very happy with the outcome of my prelim, and believe that despite minor issues such as the head space, it came out quite succesfully, especially as it was our groups first attempt. I believe that while filming our prelim everyone in our group was able to develop skills, and we all working together harmoniously as we incorporated everyones ideas and allowed everyone to play an important role during the making of our prelim.I think that my groups prelim was quite a successful first attempt and outcome after not having used the camera or equipment previous to this exercise. I also think that our group managed our time well for both the filming and the editing of our prelim, as we managed to finish things quite quickly and were overall pretty impressed with our outcome.
